    How are men doing?

    May 9th, 2008

What happened to the men in America? When did we check out of God’s plan? If that last statement disqualified you from being interested, read on it might get better. In one way or another we as a nation are currently affected by man’s failure to follow God. I’m not talking about man as “mankind” but like the “guy”, the “male”, the “Dude”. You dig? Blue paint, posters and gojo.

    March 31st, 2008

Recently, while visiting a church I stepped out into the main lobby to use the Men’s Room. Was I surprised! Instead of walking into the usual neutral colored rest room, I had stepped into a real mens room. One with blue painted walls, with large paintings of men hunting animals and posters of upcoming mens events. The rooms scent was pine needles and the hand cleaner was gojo. Wow! What an experience!  Just a thought. What are we doing in our churches to make men feel welcome? …J.A.

    Church for Men

    February 11th, 2008

Vince is the former co-owner of a well known custom chopper company in Daytona Beach, FL. In November 2007, Vince was driving and spotted the Church for Men billboard generously donated by Lamar billboard advertising. Vince came to November’s Church for Men event. Immediately following the Church for Men event in November, Vince began coming to the IronMen Bible Study on Sunday mornings at First United Methodist Church in Port Orange. Vince comes every Sunday morning. He is always on time, usually early and participates in the group.

Yesterday Vince didn’t make it to the IronMen group. Why? Vince went to church yesterday for the very first time. He went to Pastor Kennedy Jacobs church in Daytona Beach. Why? Vince heard him speak at January’s Church for Men event. Yesterday, Vince went to church for the very first time. Mike Ellis, FL

    Leaders Need Brothers

    January 11th, 2008

Building leadership and sustainable ministry to men can take quite a long time to take hold. It also takes constant care and feeding, otherwise our natural tendencies get the better of us as American men and we tend more toward the Lone Ranger approach - which is not what God designed us for. Keep Pressing on toward the one true Prize and do it with brothers. JG

    What is working?

    December 19th, 2007

We have several things we have been doing for the last few years.

We have a quarterly power lunch at a local restaurant. Attendance has gone from about 65 3 years ago to just over 100. The most we have had at one was 135+-. We also do a quarterly breakfast staggered between the lunches so there is something every 6 to 7 weeks.

We have had retreats for the last 3 years, Appalachian Trail treks, tail gate party, rafting and other recreation type events.

From these we tend to start at least one new small group following an event. Over a 3 year period we have had participation from over 500 different men within the congregation or community. There are currently around 20 small groups serving close to 150 men.

I will expand more about these things later but I think the most helpful thing for me as a leader was doing the Man in the Mirror training in Orlando (formerly Building a sustainable Men’s Ministry but now No Man Left Behind). It has been very helpful in identifying the right men for my leadership team and getting pastoral by in of everything we do. Bill Gullatt, Asbury UMC

    C&MA Mens Ministry Update

    December 17th, 2007

Western Pennsylvania District. The Lord is moving in the hearts of men. There has been very good success from the No Man Left Behind workshop at the Greensburg CMA. Since the workshop, Don Aldus, WPA district coordinator, has been busy speaking in several churches and talking to others by phone on how to start mens ministries. Two weeks ago four men from the district traveled 125 miles to help a small church with an older congregation to change 34 florescent lights. The job took two and a half hours. The men had a wonderful time with their brothers in Christ and we were blessed through serving.
